I’ve written several poems before, but this is something different. Instead of spending countless hours and intermittent days thinking, dreaming, writing, reading, and rewriting to form matching stanzas with equal syllables and trite rhyming patterns of disjointed thought, I decided to just pop this out in one hour of unhindered inspiration. Hopefully it flows better. The more editing, the less natural it becomes. I’ve never been eloquent in speech though.
“And it doesn’t have to rhyme, so don’t you feed me a line” - Blues Traveler (Run Around)
I’ve realized that rhyming is to some degree a lie. It’s the changing of words to make them sound better. But isn’t that what all writing attempts? The truth does not rhyme; neither is it attractive. So I am searching for a balance between truth and beauty.
My friend compared me to a horrible version of Charles Bukowski or Arthur Rimbaud. Not knowing them and having only read one of each of their poems, I’m flattered by any comparison. It seems all too simple to write freely in their style…but beautiful things are simple. I was told not to reinvent poetry and learn proper forms. However, I still wish to write on blank slate like my first post explained. Besides, why spend precious hours learning and reading poetry when I can write my own…
Silence shattered
Darkness broken
Sleeping ends
Life begins
Wake up dizzy
Wash the stars from your head
The sleep from your eyes
Lay back down
Get back up
The sun is calling for a new day
Answer it or get left behind
What coat should I wear?
The color for today
Is different from yesterday
But the same as before
Unlock the door
Open the door
Shut the door
Lock the door
The other door
Did I forget to lock the door?
Turn the key
Start the car
Pick a song
Let someone else pick it
Pick a station
Fill up with gas
There's a sale everyday
Every day is special
I can't get no satisfaction
Hit the gas
Stop
Go
Stop
Go
Turn the wheel
Not that wheel
The steering wheel
Don’t stop yet, you just started
Rolling stones
60 miles per hour
The cows stand still and stare
60 minutes per hour
The sun rises on the horizon
The wheel in the sky keeps on turning
Journey is classic
Open the door
Get out
Close the door
Set the alarm
Another alarm
Another door
Another door
The computer is sleeping
Stare at the screen
The world is flat
Read
Turn the page
There is no page
Nostalgia is forgotten
Write
Listen
Speak
Count
Teach
Learn
Drink
The sun stares from above
Eat
Yawn
Make someone else yawn
Wonder why it's contagious
I wish I could take a nap
They take siestas in Spain
Why can’t we?
It’s America baby
I’m so busy
I’m so bored
I don’t have time to act busy
Shut up and be happy
Change your own damn diaper
Burp
Fart
Joke
Laugh
Moan
Groan
Think
Thank
Fall in a dunk tank
Forgive
Don’t forget
What did I do today?
It doesn’t matter
LOVE
Does matter
Leave the door open
Restart the car
Change the oil
Don’t change the filter
Yet
Errands for tomorrow
Errands for today
Clean the table
Dust on the shelf
Dust in the air
You can’t see it
You can’t stop it
Breathe it in
The light shines
Reminisce
Tuesday’s gone
So is today
The sun is setting
Pray for rain
Pay for food
Cook the food
Pay for gas
Natural gas
Pay the bill
Bill the customer
Get paid
Wine
Dine
Walk away
Come back
Lay down
Talk for free
Talk is cheap
Save your minutes
What a joke
Spend your minutes
Wisely
Life counts
It cannot be counted
There is no price
Squeeze the dog
Shake a hand
Hold the door
Hug your wife
Tightly
For longer than normal
Keep holding her
Don’t let go
I have no wife
Close the open door
Brush your teeth
Don’t flush your life down the toilet
Light a match
Don’t close your eyes
Let them close
Blow out the light
The window is open
Welcome darkness
Silence
Snoring
The sun is gone
The sun is coming
Again
